When one thinks of tools and supplies for a home repair business they think of hammers, saws and hardware. Those are only part
of it. The first and foremost tool in your arsenal should be a laptop computer for the paperwork, because if you are not getting paid, then what is the
point?
A laptop will assist you in tracking all the billing and invoicing on a job to job basis. This can all
be done when the job is complete, seated in the truck, before ever leaving the home. Coupled with a portable printer, invoices can be generated right on the
spot and either paid then or a due date input on them depending on the client.
The next important tool is going to be the work vehicle. A van or truck for moving tools and materials
from jobsite to jobsite is paramount. After all, if you cannot get to the job, how are you going to do it?
Depending on what your specialty is, a truck or van may be able to hold all the tools and supplies for a
home repair business. If this is not the case and some extra room is needed, many contractors will purchase a small tag along utility trailer and have a
hitch installed on the vehicle. This lets you expand how much you can carry and may only need to be used on larger jobs, so it will be unnecessary to have it
behind at all times.
Then there are the basics, such as the proper tools for whatever types of home repairs you are doing
along with a good assortment of hardware. The last thing you want is to have to stop in the middle of a job to run to the hardware store because you need
three screws that are longer than what you have handy. Many hardware stores carry variety packs of different sizes and types of hardware so a few different
ones of these should cover anything you may run into.
