Home Improvement Licenses Guide

Going into business for yourself can be both exciting and scary. The thought of being your own boss is one that most people just dream of, but you are making it a reality. In order to do home improvements though, most areas require that you have home improvement licenses of some type to operate.

These licenses range in types from the very small repairs to the ability to do a major remodel or addition. Depending on what type of home improvement you plan on basing your business on, this will determine the license type you need to get. This means the first order of business is to choose your specialty and then go about getting the proper license for the area you plan to work in.

Some areas have specific governing bodies that issue these licenses to contractors. Depending on where you live, it may be as simple as proving insurance and a fee in order to obtain your home improvement license. In other areas, a test is required depending on your specialty to procure one of these licenses.

The test usually is based on a particular skill set for the area in which you wish to specialize in. Everything from small improvements such as windows and doors to major remodels and additions can be included. The issuing agency will usually have a study guide to help you prepare for the test before taking it.

Many community colleges also offer classes to help prepare you for the testing procedure. These are normally held at night and will let you attend while still doing whatever needs to be done during the day. This is particularly helpful if you are still working a regular job until everything is in place for you to start out on your own.
